Part 2: An Interview with René Teijgeler: Reflecting on Iraq and Cultural Heritage
In this episode (2 of 3) René talks about Babylon, Archaeological sites, Samara, al-Hatra, looting and evaluation position. René Teijgeler is a social scientist and a conservator. He studied Sociology, Social Psychology and Anthropology (summa cum laude). As a conservator he worked at the National Library of the Netherlands and designed risk management plans for different heritage institutions home and abroad. Throughout his career René developed a keen interest in preservation issues in non-western countries. Working for Fair Trade NL he got acquainted with the ins and outs of humanitarian aid and applied the different humanitarian standards to heritage aid projects. He joined the army as a reserve officer of civil affairs and served as senior cultural advisor in Iraq (2004-2005) and in Afghanistan (2009). He has advised many international heritage organizations, lectured in many capitals and published numerous articles.

Louise Haxthausen Director of the UNESCO Office for Iraq
Director of the UNESCO Office for Iraq, Louise Haxthausen, speaks about the rebuilding of Mosul and national and international efforts to revive its spirit of co-existence, learning and education. Louise Haxthausen also speaks about the importance of a $50m contribution from the Government of the UAE to rebuild the destroyed al Nuri Mosque complex and the Habda Minerat, and the role of intangible heritage as an essential part of reconstruction. Educating for Rights in a Context of Protracted Conflict – The Case of the Occupied West Bank | Dr Mai Abu Moghli
The Palestinian Ministry of Education (MOE) was established in 1994 following the signing of the interim peace agreement (the Oslo Accords) between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO). Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip inherited a weak, neglected and fragmented education system. However, over the years the MOE was able to increase the number of schools and decrease illiteracy rates. An important departure from the old curricula was the inclusion of human rights and citizenship education. In this presentation, II will focus on three questions related to the introduction of HRE in PA schools: 1- What are the reasons behind the introduction of HRE in Palestinian Authority (PA) schools? 2- How do stakeholders make meaning of and implement HRE? 3- What is the relationship between HRE and the struggle against the Occupation and for political and social change?
