DERC Seminar Series: Dr Namrata Sharma - Integrating Buddhist / Soka Perspectives within the UNESCO-led Discourse and Practice of Global Citizenship Education
Reflecting on key outcomes from her long-term research and publications, Dr. Sharma shares the example of soka (lit. value-creation) as a concept and a rapidly growing movement of Buddhists who have endorsed several UN initiatives. Through her work Dr. Sharma argues the importance of paying attention to different philosophical understandings and values-based perspectives that can bring forth diverse and creative solutions to global issues. Doing this can also propel people and communities to take part in local, national, regional, and global solutions as engaged citizenry whose values inform their action for positive personal, social and environmental transformation. Dr. Namrata Sharma is an adjunct professor at the State University of New York and an academic advisor with AlphaPlus consultancy, UK.

Welcome, Introductions and Outline for the Day
Education for Social Change: The many histories of Woodcraft Folk Throughout its history the Woodcraft Folk has had a strong internationalist tradition and this has been reflected in a range educational initiatives from the 1930s onwards that promote a sense of being a ‘world citizen’. The Folk’s engagement with this theme mirrors broader educational initiatives in the 1930s in response to the threat of fascism and the promotion of ‘education for world citizenship’, the emergence in the 1960s and 1970s of social movements around internationalism and in the last decade or so around ‘education for global citizenship.’ Debs McCahon - Director of Development (Joint Chief Executive) Lloyd Russell-Moyle, MP Chair: Professor Douglas Bourn, UCL DERC
