Making the next global vaccine
In this episode, we discuss UCL's VaxHub, a collaboration between UCL and Oxford, focused on vaccine development and manufacturing. VaxHub, active since 2018, aims to create sustainable and accessible vaccine platforms for low and middle-income countries. They work on various vaccine types, including RNA, glyco conjugate, and adenovirus-based vaccines. The hub emphasizes faster, cost-effective methods and localized manufacturing to improve global vaccine access. Notable projects include the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and glyco conjugate vaccines. The conversation also highlighted the challenges of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of global health initiatives to prevent pandemics.

Neonatal infections (part 1): The NeoOBS study and the global challenge of neonatal sepsis
214,000 newborn babies die of sepsis caused by infections that are resistant to antibiotics every year. This is a major problem worldwide, but disproportionally affects low- and middle- income countries. Reenu Thomas and Adrie Bekker, two neonatologists from South Africa, and Francesca Schiavone, clinical project manager at the MRC CTU at UCL in London, discuss the challenges of treating neonatal sepsis and present the results from an observational study (NeoOBS), which assessed mortality rates of babies with sepsis.

The ARCHERY study – Can AI transform the way we plan radiotherapy treatment globally?
In this first episode, we talk to Dr Ajay Aggarwal about an exciting new study to evaluate if artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the way we plan radiotherapy in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The study is called the ARCHERY (short for “Artificial Intelligence based radiotherapy treatment planning for Cervical, Head and Neck and Prostate cancer”). Ajay explains how this study could improve global access to radiotherapy by automatising parts of radiotherapy treatment planning using AI. He also highlights the importance of evaluating the implementation and cost-effectiveness of this AI approach, as well as its plan to build capacity in LMIC.
