What actually is inclusion?
There is lots of discussion about inclusion, but what the term actually means remains unclear both in practice and policy.
In this seminar Dr Mintz discussed what inclusion really means as set out in his new book "Liberal Perspectives on Inclusion", published by Routledge, available open access.
Dr Mintz considers the political values that lie behind debates about inclusion and argues that inclusion is perhaps better thought of not as an ideal, but rather as a process of negotiation between competing values and priorities. The book also presents detailed case studies of what this process might look like in the mainstream K-12 classroom, and how teachers deal with the dilemmas of working with difference.
Recorded in discussion with Professor Brad Blitz, IOE - UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, on Thursday 6th February 2025.
