MadeAtUCL - Perspectives
This episode we reflect on the need to listen to a whole range of different perspectives. We follow the flight of a senior Nazi and ask 'why do people do terrible things?'. We tour London's ever-changing Queer scene, imagining the night-life of the future. And we venture to South America, where we seek the path to paradise with the Guarani and Ashaninka peoples, who have important environmental wisdom that we can't afford to lose. Join Suzie as she explores various perspectives with: • Prof Philippe Sands (UCL Laws) • Prof Ben Campin (Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL Urban Laboratory) and Lo Marshall (UCL Geography) • Prof Jerome Lewis (UCL Anthropology) For the transcript and more info visit https://www.ucl.ac.uk/made-at-ucl/podcasts

Lunch Hour Lecture: Mental Health and the Pandemic: Past, Present and Future!
Date: Tuesday 19 May 2020 Speaker: Anthony David, Director at Institute of Mental Health, UCL About the lecture: We are in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and cannot know quite what effects it will have on physical and mental health. Mankind has suffered pandemics before, for example the ‘Spanish Flu’ pandemic of 1918 - perhaps the worst in modern times. More recently coronaviruses have caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemics in Asia and the Middle East. Concern regarding mental health is prominent in the current pandemic and there is already considerable effort being made to measure and mitigate mental disorders. In this lecture I will try and draw some lessons from previous pandemics. I will look specifically at suicide and summarise work from a recent systematic review which highlights anxiety, depression and stress disorders following coronavirus infections. Also how modern epidemiological research and social media are helping monitor mental health in the population.

The future of Education and Social Science research
Welcome to the very first episode of Research for the Real World, a podcast series from the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). We thought that we’d start the series by painting a bit of a picture of what research looks like here at the IOE, and there’s no one better to help give us a sense of what’s going on than Alison Fuller, Professor of Vocational Education and Work and the IOE Pro-Director of Research and Development. Rob and Alison discuss the kind of role IOE research has played over the years, and what’s in store for us in the future, particularly as we try to quickly understand and navigate the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic. You’ll also get to hear stories about Alison’s fascinating personal journey; from leaving school to travel across Europe, returning to the United Kingdom and picking up where she left off, and how those experiences shaped her passion for research into apprenticeships, vocational education and lifelong learning.

FLOPCAST Ep 16 Outro and Credits
This is the 16th and final episode of a podcast mini-series to accompany FLOP 13 Stories of Failure, a free exhibition at the UCL Octagon Gallery open from 21 October 2019 to 10 April 2020. The exhibition has been commissioned by UCL Culture and curated by Thomas Kador (UCL Arts & Sciences). It shines a spotlight on a topic that most of us rather avoid and not talk about and investigates (through 13 stories) what happens when things go wrong. The FLOPCAST series comprises 15 different voices, all experts in their fields, discussing some of the objects on display at the exhibition to tell these stories of failure. The intention is that the podcasts can be accessed both while people are looking at the exhibits and independently without having visited the exhibition. In this final episode FLOP Exhibition Curator, Dr Thomas Kador, presents a brief overview and gives the credits and acknowledgements.
