Prosperity beyond sport: empowering post-athletic career growth
What happens when a career you've dedicated your whole life to suddenly comes to an end? In this episode of Life of PIE, Onya sits down with Xuecong Wang, an alum from the Prosperity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship programme, and Aditi Mutatkar, a former athlete and founder of the Simply Sport Foundation, an organisation dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by athletes when they retire from professional sports, offering them the necessary tools and guidance for a successful career transition. Together, they explore the challenges athletes face when transitioning out of their sports careers. Drawing from Xuecong’s research and Aditi’s grassroots work supporting athletes, they discuss the impact of balancing sports with academia, the lack of infrastructure for athlete career support, and the vital need for career transition assistance programs. Hear how the right preparation can help athletes transition successfully beyond their playing years.

The entrepreneurial state as a welfare state
An international panel discuss ways to further strengthen the welfare/innovation relationship, for instance, how welfare provision can support recipients to become creators and entrepreneurs, and the role of local government and the voluntary sector in delivering public services. They explore how specific welfare practices and institutions can drive mission-based innovation policy. Could Universal Basic Income, for instance, help to combat climate change? Can pension funds become a source of long-term investment in public value? What models of care will deliver the services required in an ageing society while promoting innovation at the organisational level with the potential for spillover to other sectors? Chair: IIPP's Dr Craig Berry, Associate Professor in Economic Policy, Anna Coote, Principal Fellow at the New Economics Foundation Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council Hilary Cottam, social entrepreneur and Honorary Professor, IIPP Dr Nick O'Donovan, Senior Lecturer, FERC, MMU
