Introduction to Humanitarian Policy (IRDR0039)
This module will provide you with an introduction to the global policy making process in a humanitarian context and will help develop practical communication skills in policy messaging (spoken and written). The module will cover major global policy frameworks such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals and UN Conventions and Agreements such as the Human Rights Act, the Istanbul Convention, the Hague Convention, as well as the Global Compact for Migration. We will look at how certain countries have incorporated or struggled to incorporate these global policy frameworks into their national policy. Using real world examples, guest lectures, and case studies, students will step into diverse humanitarian crisis situations to fully appreciate the complexity of turning policy making into practice such as in the context of climate change, natural hazards, the COVID-19 pandemic, and gender-based violence including domestic

Historical & Contemporary Perspectives to Conflict & Migration (IRDR0040)
This module analyses historical and contemporary perspectives on forced migration and the range of theories on conflict and violence that causes these events. The module aims to introduce students to a range of theories in conflict and migration so that they will be able to analyse the root causes of different types of conflicts and violence, such as direct violence, structural violence and representational violence. They will gain a sound understanding of the pull and push factors of migration; the situations of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs); and IDP and refugee relationships with their host community. This module is a unique opportunity for students to acquire knowledge through interdisciplinary approaches. Lectures will examine key events and ideas that have contributed to diverse forms of forced migration, including migrant labour in the Gulf, the Turkey-Greece population exchange, modern slavery, and immobility as a reason behind vulnerability.
