Race, sex, class and educational achievement at age 16 - CEPEO Seminar Series
Educational achievement at age 16, the end of statutory full-time education in England, is key to young people’s future educational, economic, social and health outcomes. I look at achievement gaps by the three central dimensions of equality: race, sex and class, and use the Second Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE2) which is the most up-to-date nationally representative dataset with comprehensive measures of all three dimensions.

Why isn't my professor black? - UCL panel discussion
There are just 85 black professors out of 18,510 in the UK and the number has barely changed in eight years. The percent of black professors (0.4%) shows a striking disparity with the proportion of black students, which has increased steadily each year and now stands at 6%. What does it mean when the generation that produces knowledge is so unrepresentative of the generation that consumes it? This panel debate will be chaired by Professor Michael Arthur, UCL President and Provost. It will aim to ask difficult questions and explore even more challenging solutions. Speakers: Professor Michael Arthur, Chair, UCL President and Provost Dr William Ackah, Panel Member, Birkbeck, University of London Dr Lisa Amanda Palmer, Panel Member, Newman University Dr Shirley Tate, Panel Member, University of Leeds Dr Nathaniel Adam Tobias Coleman, Panel Member, UCL Deborah Gabriel, Panel Member, Founder and CEO of Black British Academics

Public Lecture by David Scott. Equalities & Inequalities in the English Education System
Professor David Scott talks about social categories such as gender, race, dis-ability, intelligence, sexuality and class, as they are used in English education system. Knowledge of and about them and their effects is central to how we can understand society, equalities and inequalities within it, and educational relations. He will draw on events, happenings and experiences to develop a more coherent account with the potential to transform our understandings of these matters and hence our educational practices. David's lecture is drawn from his book 'Equalities & Inequalities in the English Education System, published by UCL IOE Press, 2018.
