What is a Researcher? [Short version]
Researchers often involve young children in their work and hearing directly from children helps to better understand their experiences. As a first step, researchers working with children need to explain their research to children (and their parent/guardian) to help them decide if they would like to take part. However, children are often not familiar with the role of a researcher. For children to make an informed choice, they need to have some idea of what 'research' actually is, but it can be difficult to explain this to them in a simple, understandable way. We have developed a video resource to support the informed consent process with young child research participants. This short, engaging video is intended to be used by researchers from a variety of fields to help them explain what they do to young children (age 3-7 years). How can we best support children’s participation in research? Considerations, strategies and resources for ethics and consent
Prior research has shown that communicating to children the intentions, aims and benefits of participation in research in an accessible way can be challenging. However, this is necessary to ensure children are providing truly informed consent prior to participating in any research study. Through a series of talks we examine the particular importance of ethics and consent when working with children as well as discuss UCL ethics approval procedures for undertaking research with children. These talks also provide practical examples of how to support the involvement of different child populations (e.g., very young children, children with disabilities) sharing existing strategies and resources that can provide inspiration and guidance for other researchers. This is activity was a Researcher-led Initiative that has been funded by the UCL Research Staff Development Programme
