An Introduction to Problem-Based Learning in the Humanities - new version
In March 2023, the Centre for Humanities Education supported a work-shop on problem-based learning. Problem-based learning is an approach to teaching that has long been used in the fields of law, medicine and STEM. At the outset of a module, students are presented with a real-world problem, case study or scenario from their discipline and work together to find a solution, usually culminating in a final product (report, presentation, exhibition etc.) Organised by Dr Selena Daly (UCL SELCS) in collaboration with Jesper Hansen (UCL Arena), this workshop showcased how problem-based learning techniques can be applied to the humanities classroom, and featured case studies of modules across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities led by Elettra Carbone (SELCS), Geraldine Horan (SELCS), and Ranjita Dhital (Arts and Sciences).

Arctic ambivalence and post-coloniality in Iceland - new version
UCL Scandinavian Studies Indigeneity in Conversation Series featuring Ann-Sofie Nielsen Gremaud, University of Iceland. Chaired by Dr Anne Grydehøj. Greenland is Iceland’s closest neighbour, but the relationship has not been close between the two countries. In her talk Ann-Sofie Gremaud will address shifting attitudes in Iceland towards Greenland and examples that show the role that it has come to play in Icelandic nation building. The cases range from disputes about the 1905 colonial exhibition in Denmark to recent geo-political shifts in the Arctic. Gremaud will touch upon the terms of the research questions asked within the field and how these terms change in regard to making sense of Icelandic post-coloniality.

The Legacy of Eugenics in Scandinavia - new version
Organised by UCL Scandinavian Studies, this seminar on the Legacy of Eugenics in Scandinavia is part of the Nordic Indigeneity in Conversation seminar series (2020-21). Chaired by Prof. Jakob Stougaard-Nielsen. Speakers include the Swedish writer and filmmaker Maja Hagerman, Finnish Tornedalian Historian Curt Persson and Sami artist Katarina Pirak Sikku. Panel is part of 'From Small Beginnings...: Addressing the continuing shadows of eugenics' series of events across the world leading up to marking 100 years since the Second International Eugenics Congress held at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The series offers and opportunity to focus on how eugenics has been used and misused over the past century but still more importantly to critically assess how the intellectual inertia of eugenic habits of mind continue to globally influence political, social and medical ideas, in addition to practices and policies.
