Promoting participation of under-represented families in research
This Impact Engagement Meeting is based on research findings of the project entitled “Engaging low-income families in education research: an interdisciplinary exploratory study”, funded by the Institute of Communities and Societies, Brunel University London. The project involved researchers from Brunel University London, University College London, University of Nottingham and Zheijiang University, China. During this meeting, researchers and stakeholders from NGOs and local authorities will discuss how to make research more impactful and beneficial to under-represented families. The long-term goal is to set up a network platform to connect researchers with schools, NGOs, local authorities and individual families for the purpose of promoting participation of under-represented families in education research. We will discuss this initiative at the meeting.

Can Mentoring Alleviate Family Disadvantage in Adolescence? A Field Experiment to Improve Labor-Market Prospects We study a mentoring program that aims to improve the labor-market prospects of school-attending adolescents from disadvantaged families by offering them a university-student mentor. Our RCT investigates program effectiveness on three outcome dimensions that are highly predictive of later labor-market success: math grades, patience/social skills, and labor-market orientation.

Assisted Reproduction: A short educational film | UCL IOE
This was produced as part of the IOE Impact Fellowship 2022. This is a short film informed by research conducted at the Thomas Coram Research Unit, UCL, as part of the Young Adults Study (PI Associate Professor Sophie Zadeh). The research found that people are interested in knowing more about what assisted reproduction is, why people use assisted reproduction to start a family, and how it is regulated in the UK. Dr Catherine Jones created this short film for young adults to be used as an educational resource, with illustrations by Josh Knowles. The film is a work in progress - Dr Jones hopes to use feedback from young adults to revise any aspects they'd like to know more about, to make it as helpful and informative as possible, and to co-create a leaflet to accompany the film.
