UCL KL Seminars: Computing in primary school: Setting out for a systematic approach
Computing in Years 1 to 4 is a big unknown, lacking a holistic process and systematic support for the pupils’ learning. Building on the UCL ScratchMaths project Professor Kalaš and colleagues have subsequently begun designing and developing a systematic teaching/learning process for the four lower primary years. Using a design research approach they have developed new programming tools (following the existing ScratchMaths 5E pedagogical framework) and also developed an adequate support for teachers. In this seminar Professor Kalaš presents their new initiative “Computing with Emil”, its broad intention, the result for Year 3, and powerful ideas of computing which pupils will have an opportunity to engage with, as well as some outcomes of the related design research in the area of the levels of control in primary educational programming.
